AFRIMA: Kenya scoops 14 nominations

Kenya has received an impressive 14 nominations in nine categories at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) with eight artistes hoping to fly the country’s flag high.

Sauti Sol, Dan Aceda, Muthoni Drummer Queen and Elani are up for top nominations in the Best African group, Artiste of the year, Best African Hip-hop and Revelation of the African content respectively.

Kaz, Muthoni The drummer queen, Size 8 and Wahu have been nominated for the Best female artiste in Eastern Africa while Dan Aceda will be hoping to beat Diamond, Chameleone, Maurice Kirya and Kidum to scoop the Best male artiste in Eastern Africa award.

TOUGH ROAD
Nigeria’s top acts Ice Prince and Davido will be Muthoni’s biggest obstacle to her scooping the Best African Hip-hop (song) category.

Elani have two nominations having received the nod for “Best African pop (a song) category but they will not have it easy as they have to face off with Mafikizolo from South Africa and P-Square from Nigeria.

The group which hit the limelight thanks to their “Kookoo” hit also received the “Reveltion of the African continent” nod.

Wahu has been nominated in the “Best African RNB & Soul” category and she faces an uphill task of taking on 2Face, Maurice Kirya and Vannessa Mdee.

Size 8 is sitting pretty in the “Best Female artiste in African inspirational song” category thanks to her hit “Moto”.

Two Kenyan gospel heavyweights Pitson and Jimmy Gait will faceoff in the “Best male artiste in African inspirational music” group for their Lingala Ya Yesu and Makekes hits.

Dan Aceda will have to fend off competition from P-Square if he is to bring home the “Artiste of the year” award.

AFRIMA describes itself as “a combined effort to recognise, award, promote and preserve Africa’s rich music culture,” and says its vision is “the ultimate recognition of African music globally.”
