What you need to know:

  • June’s latest show, dubbed All of June, will be a showcasing of her varied talents: acting, emceeing, dancing, and of course singing, which is the main focus.
  • In her show, she will be belting out some of the favourites from her latest album, released in 2016 and composed from a wealth of experiences over the last 20 years of music and life; though definite greats in their own respect, June is just getting started.

In the wake of the outrage stemming from defunct groups coming to Kenya, I have a treat for you if you’re planning to boycott the so-called foreign has-beens. In all fairness, Kenya has recently been described as the burial ground for the careers of musicians whose last hits were when this crop of 20-year olds were born; Blackstreet is coming in two weeks, without Teddy Riley, as is SWV, and most fans who are not die-hards can name any of their hits past the year 2000. But a regular ticket is still going for Sh 5,000 and a VIP, ticket for Sh 25,000.

June Gachui’s concert, however, is selling tickets at the gate for Sh 2,500, for two shows at the Kenya National Theatre on February 2 and 3.

WILL BELT OUT FAUVORITES

June’s latest show, dubbed All of June, will be a showcasing of her varied talents: acting, emceeing, dancing, and of course singing, which is the main focus. In her show, she will be belting out some of the favourites from her latest album, released in 2016 and composed from a wealth of experiences over the last 20 years of music and life; though definite greats in their own respect, June is just getting started.

The show also has some great featured guests: Blinky Bill, Just A Band member and your DJ’s favourite DJ; Art In Motion, a dance group with more heart than most; Jason Runo of Because You Said So (of course! Another event that you can attend the week after, if there’s money left over) and Elsaphan Njora, actor and entertainer, among others.

All of Juneis all of three hours long and worth every penny you pay – and I haven’t even started on the band that backs this lovely lady. You would be inclined to think that she is trying to pull a Beyonce – not with the twins, but with the all-female band concept – until you look closer and notice the even balance of gender, from bootylicious backup to breath-taking bass guitar. In her own words, she says she had to “find other hot female instrumentalists”, because she couldn’t do all the (hot) work. Ha! The guys aren’t half bad either!

GOOD LAUGHS, GOOD MUSIC

If you like a good laugh, good music, and good productions where the projectors and lights actually work in sync with the people on stage, then this is the show for you. And I can tell you this, because I watched the preview – there will be no has-beens on that KNT stage this Thursday night, and therefore, no lip-syncing, no 25-minute impotent pretence, and definitely no boos.
