What you need to know:

  • He is the guy men want to be and women want to bed. Idris Elba has husbands writing poems about their wives' obsession with him. JOSEPHINE MOSONGO looks at this phenome.

Without a doubt, Idris Elba is the man of the moment, on a career high that many in Hollywood would kill for.

With so much going on for him, it is pretty hard to pinpoint exactly why the British actor is causing ripples in Tinseltown.

It might be the cliché, tall dark and handsome with a sexy voice to boot, or the bounce to his step that weirdly resembles another Hollywood leading man, Denzel Washington.

Or maybe, it is his calculating demeanour coupled with a creased brow that pulls you into some of the character’s he plays so remarkably well.

Add to that the ease with which he switches from a British accent to an American one and the fact that he is an incredibly versatile and unspeakably talented actor and that may perhaps be the reason why he is on everyone’s radar.

Elba, is unquestionably handsome and through the years, he has been smartly building his career on more than just his looks.

But to be blatantly honest, his rugged face is what has so many ladies swooning and fawning all over him. He is the guy men want to be and women want to bed.

In an interview with GQ magazine, stand-up comedian Dave Chapelle talks about his female employees would swoon after the actor whenever he showed up at the "Chapelle’s Show".

“…There’s a lot of women who used to work on the show… all very professional, with the single exception when Idris would come around. It doesn’t matter how big a star would be on the show, when he came around, women would just lose their goddamn minds,” he said.

It does not matter whether Elba is on set working or at home with his family, either way he causes meltdowns. Back in February last year, Twitter went crazy when a man tweeted a poem about his wife’s obsession with him. The amateur poem called “I Am Sorry I’m Not Idris Elba.”

Elba’s only response was a picture of himself on Instagram with the caption “I’m NOT sorry I’m Idris Elba.” That was the epitome of cool.

Idris Elba, born Idrissa Akuna “Idris” Elba was born in East London. His father was from Sierra Leone and mother a Ghanaian.

He moved to the States when he was about 12 years old and started his acting career in the late 90’s.

Since then he has starred, filmed and produced in a long list of television shows and movies that he has showcased a diverse range of roles that have enabled him to find a sweet spot of fame.

Elba has taken up a huge range of characters, from the series Luther where he plays a cop with a lot of emotions on the right side of the law, to a murderous, psychopathic monster in the thriller No Good Deed who does not know when to stop.

His best-known role in the US was perhaps his portrayal of Stringer Bell in the drama series The Wire in 2002.

He has since then grown into a very seasoned actor, landing leading-man roles in numerous movies.

Some of his best work yet is in the films Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls, This Christmas, Obsessed, Takers, The Losers, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Prometheus, and Pacific Rim. He won a Golden Globe nomination for his spot Nelson Mandela in the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Acting is not the only thing he does well. In addition to his stellar acting career, he is a DJ who goes by the moniker DJ Big Driis and a hip hop soul musician. His, music is an escape for when things get too crazy.

“It is important for actors to have other things, that is why I DJ,” he says.

“When I’m in Ibiza spinning to a room of 200 ravers, they don’t really care that I’m an actor. I’m letting off steam with my personality. You know, shaking some of the bulls**t off,” he says.

The movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom inspired his album Mi Mandela which was the result of extensive research dedicated to discovering music loved by Nelson Mandela.

Elba watched the movie with his father who was seriously ill at the time, he said how inspiring South African music was. That was the nudge that Elba needed.

“My dad said, ‘You’ve always loved music, so you should go back to South Africa and do it’,” Elba recalls.

“A little later my dad passed away. At the funeral, my uncle was DJ’ing and he played all of these amazing songs that my dad loved. I just said to myself, ‘Man, I’m going to do it’.”

The record was well received by the Mandela family especially Winnie Mandela. Not only is he a brand to reckon with but he is in the inner circle of one of the most famous and revolutionary families in the world.

Idris Elba may not have the mind blowing fame associated with the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio or Matt Damon but he is the guy who rose from selling weed, living in a van, working as a doorman to kissing Beyonce in a movie.

He is the person who is hugged by President Obama and gets asked to sit beside him.

Just by looking at Elba’s career, he is the definition of success and has earned the reputation of being a cool guy. Adored by millions of fans around the world, that reputation however makes him paranoid.

“Sometimes you’re not sure what’s real or not, especially when it comes to relationships... If you’re adored by millions, sometimes even on your own front doorstep you can become paranoid and constantly question, ‘Who is he? Who is she?’ I know I’ve been guilty of it in the past,”

Elba has already been touted as the first black man to play Bond in the James Bond movies, but although that might never happen, it was an honor for him.

In response to the gossip surrounding the Bond rumours that were fuelled when the Sony’s executives’ emails were hacked, Elba posted a quirky picture on twitter with the caption “Isn’t 007 supposed to be handsome? Glad you think I’ve a got a shot!

The actor already has a full calendar for 2015, he will be working on Avengers: Age of Ultron, Beasts of No Nation, The Jungle Book, Bastille Day and in 2016 Finding Dory.

There are a lot of reasons to admire this multi-talented, charming man who can pull of a tux, mingle with the most famous people on earth and still blend into a crowd. But people will still fuss over him just the same because he is simply Idris Elba.
