After a long wait fans of Wizkid in the region all assembled at the Carnivore Gardens on Sunday for a performance by their beloved artiste.

October 19 was the date for Good Times Africa’s event “Africa Dance Party” that was sponsored by units of Nation Media Group, and in which Wizkid was the headline act of the night.

His entrance, just after 1am, caught everyone off guard. While everyone looked to the stage entrance as Eric Omondi announced he was next on, Wizkid made his way to the stage through the crowd without anyone noticing.

The crowd was wild in their reception, and security had to be increased at the guard railing that made the perimeter of the performance stage.

A PERFORMANCE WORTH NOTING

Wizkid gave a performance worth noting, as he sang the crowd’s favourite tunes, including “Caro”, “On Top Your Matter”, “Bombay” and “Jaiye Jaiye”. It seemed, for some of the ladies at the event, it was not enough to just get to see the artiste — some would have preferred mementos of him, even if it meant taking him.

Thrice, the singer’s burly personal aide and security had to battle the ladies to wrestle him from their clutches. Even then, the artiste appealed to the security people not to harass his fans.

The performance itself was fast-paced and full of energy and the crowd responded in kind — picking up songs where the artiste asked them to and chanting back “yea, yea” when he asked them if they were having a good time.

I have very little to complain about, but it’s a complaint all the same. For an artiste with such rich African influence in his tracks, I think the performance would have been even more elating had he used a band to back up his singing.

At a time when we are preaching to our local artistes to up their live performances by embracing the entirety of live music for live performances, it’s discouraging to see that the fan is charged exorbitantly to listen to playback tracks.
