What you need to know:

  • The “Sura Yako” remix was shot only a few weeks ago when Iyanya was in Kenya. He was so taken with the song that it was literally shot and edited as soon as the idea was fronted.
  • Now that Sauti Sol is Africa’s best Act, they will be pitted against Mohammed Assaf (Palestine) and Yo Yo Hami Singh (India) to make Best Worldwide Act.

Sauti Sol has released a video remix of their popular hit song “Sura Yako”.

This has come hot on the heels of winning the MTV Europe Music Awards Best African Act.

The video features Nigerian artiste Iyanya, an international heavyweight, and is produced by Enos Olik and his crew, Bokeh Family. Victoria Kimani, with striking blue hair, also makes a cameo.

Iyanya adds that pan-African, soulful, almost Lingala-style tone with some Naija in it, just enough zest not to overkill the original song, which was already fantastic.

Sauti Sol’s publicist, Anyiko Awoko, is confident that their online campaign, which led to the first win, will lead to a global triumph.

“But Africa needs to vote, between now and October 29,” says Anyiko. “We have a lot of support from East Africa, Rwanda – who sent us a video of themselves doing the Lipala dance – South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria too. As well as Malawi, who hosted them during the Lake of Stars Festival last year.”

No African musician or group has ever won this title. Sauti Sol would be the first.
