A friendly sandwich bar

What you need to know:

  • e bought their steak salad and the grilled chicken sandwich.

  • The meat and chicken (or tofu for vegetarians) is portioned into pre-selected amounts. The amounts looked tiny but it is still value for money.

Subway opened an outlet directly opposite the Village Market about six months ago. Their petrol station location is convenient and they stay open until 10pm.

We were pleasantly surprised to see a big poster on the window with the offer: “Roast chicken breast sandwich – Sh200.” For that price, we had to try them. I particularly enjoyed their steak salads from their downtown branch and the branch at the Junction Mall.

Amiable staff

We walked in and a young lady looked up from her mop and bucket and smiled. She greeted us as we walked to the counter. I noticed that the restaurant floor was clean, the tables had been wiped, and there is a large hand sanitiser dispenser in front of the cash till.

At the other end of the counter, a lady named Cindy (they wear name badges) made eye contact and asked what we would like.

My partner is not a Subway buff so Cindy patiently explained how the concept of sandwich assembly works.

As a certified sandwich artist, she also recommended her favourite bread. All their bread is freshly baked in-house and they have about six different flavours.

Value for money

Cindy’s colleague assured us that we could have as many veggies and condiments as we liked so we went all out on the lettuce, cheese and olives. There are pickles, peppers, jalapenos, cucumbers and just about every vegetable you would want to put in a sandwich. The salad costs the same as a large sandwich and comes in a huge portion.

Subway promises that their food is always healthy and fresh. They did not disappoint in terms of taste and freshness.

The bread is soft with a crunchy crust and the toppings are good. Compared to Subway in the USA, this branch delivered the same level of service and food quality.

In fact, my first experience at a Subway in the mid-western US was a bit of a culture shock because I could not understand the sandwich artist’s accent.

She rapidly twanged, “Fuherrtogo?” which I eventually learned meant “For here or to go?” meaning, “Eat in or take-away?”

This branch adhered well to their international standards and Cindy gave us first-class service.
