A pub landlord has sparked controversy after coming up with a number of rules for Christmas drinkers.

Steve Bowen, who is in charge of Stoke Inn in Plymouth, south west England, has laid down the law in his drinking establishment because he is fed up of rare drinkers turning up over the festive period and demanding to get served at the bar before anyone else.

One of the rules states: "Newsflash: You are NOT next. You might have been in the bar queue longer than anybody else, but that doesn't mean you're next. The bartender is in charge of who is next. So don't p**s them off."

Another reads: "Don't start drinking at 4pm. You're an amateur, so don't start out with a marathon."

However, the rules - which were written by comedian Rob Halden and posted on the pub's Facebook page - have caused controversy with some social media users, but Steve insists the majority of the feedback he's received has been positive.

He told The Times newspaper: "98 per cent of those who have contacted me have got the joke.

"The other two per cent are Christmas drinkers."
