What you need to know:

  • Since we can’t all go to a stadium to witness the pomp and glory that often accompanies the day, it would be great to have other options on how to best spend the holiday.
  • Well, here are some great suggestions!

Don’t spend your Madaraka Day lazing in. Venture out...there will be so many exciting food-related events taking place!

The best part about Madaraka Day, in my opinion, is the long weekend. The fact that you don’t have to wake up early on a Monday just feels like a reward.

Since we can’t all go to a stadium to witness the pomp and glory that often accompanies the day, it would be great to have other options on how to best spend the holiday. Well, here are some great suggestions:

Super Soul Sunday at Carnivore

Remember how good the music from the 60s, 70s and the 80s was? I may be a 90’s kid but I recognise that it was simply amazing. If, like me, you love soul music of days gone by, Super Soul Madaraka at Carnivore Restaurant will hit the spot.

On May 31st, the legendary DJ Adrian will take you on a time travel, back to the days of your youth, as he plays your favourite hits from the likes of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Bobby Womack, Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, Barry White among other greats. Tickets are only Sh500 per person with doors opening from 7pm.

Madaraka Cruise in Mombasa.

Planning a trip down to the coast to enjoy some sun and sand? The Tamarind Dhow will be hosting a special Madaraka Day Cruise on May 31 and June 1 from 1pm to 3pm respectively. There’s nothing that beats fresh, well-prepared seafood and a glass of your favourite wine as you float along the ocean with the salty air gently brushing against your skin.

The spirit of adventure and being one with the waves evokes an aura of peace. At only Sh2,800 for adults and Sh1,400 for kids below 12, this cruise should make for the perfect family afternoon. Perhaps your significant other has been complaining that you hardly spend any time together. This should be the perfect opportunity to swoop her off her feet!

Nyama Choma Saturdays at Kempinski

The greatest weekend combination known to Kenyan men has to be nyama choma and a cold Tusker. Café Villa Rosa at Kempinski is proud to introduce nyama choma Saturdays. If you and your mates are looking for a great way to catch up over a great meal, this should be an excellent plan.

There will be a salad and dessert buffet, a wide selection of prime cuts of meats and seafood. You can choose from a variety of sides including grilled ugali. Yes, you read that right! You also get five Tuskers for the price of three, an ideal offer that should keep your tummy happy and the conversation alive.

Dining In The Dark at Tribe

Are you looking for adventure? Does the call to try something new excite you? Well, this should be a plan! Dining in the dark now at Tribe Hotel is a fine dining concept that was brought to life by Abdul Kamara of Gizani in partnership with Dans le Noir, a group of French restaurants that popularised the concept in Europe.

The purpose of the event is to embrace the taste, aroma and texture of your meal in complete darkness, giving you a peek into the world of the visually-impaired.

Saturday May 30th should therefore be bookmarked in your calendar. Tickets will set you back Sh6,000 per person and you can purchase them online at www.eatout.co.ke/events/gizani.

Sunday Brunch At Pablo’s

After a great night out, you need a cure for that hangover. Since painkillers aren’t tasty, how about something nutritional and fun? Brunch at Pablo’s at the Best Western Premier in Hurlingham should be the answer. Indulge in their fluffy eggs, steak salad or eggs benedict. Feeling sweet toothed?

Their carrot cake is one to die for. You can even opt for their blueberry cheesecake which is simply a delight. Hangover cure? Have a Bloody Mary cocktail and feel your headache wash away. The best part about their brunch is that it lasts all day so there’s absolutely no need to rush. Take the family out.
