Expect bigger festival next year, say organisers

Organisers of the recent Mombasa International Cultural Festival are banking on the festival revive the slump in the tourism sector and promote the coastal town as a cultural and entertainment hub.

It was a fun-filled four days with a range of activities ranging from boat racing, swimming, storytelling, music and a film festival. Investors were also not left behind as they showcased their wares at the Mama Ngina Drive.

The county government used the festival to market the town and region following the recent adverse travel advisories issued by western countries.

Governor Hassan Joho led the festivities during the opening ceremony with a street procession from Uhuru Gardens to Fort Jesus.

“The festival has exceeded our expectations,” says Rabia Salim, the chairperson of the organising committee.

“We were able to attract thousands of people to the event. I remember during the ladies night, so many women showed up that they overwhelmed the venue we had selected,” she added.

“The culture aspect was brought out with the numerous traditional dancers, the array of local food and revellers in ethnic outfits. Expect bigger, better things next year.”

The closing ceremony concert was held at Mama Ngina Drive. Boy band Sauti Sol performed followed by a 30 minute fireworks display at midnight.

Other artistes who performed were Susumila, Chikuze, MC Gates and Deejay Lenium.

Hotels reported being fully booked during the four days of the festival. “Issues of security are a thing of the past, we have experienced peace in the last month. I welcome all visitors to Mombasa to enjoy not only the beaches and historical sites but also the rich culture,” said Joho.
