New artistes feted in inaugural Flamingo Awards

The inaugural Flamingo Awards for up and coming artistes took place in Nakuru Town last weekend. More than 60 nominees fought for the prizes in the various categories in the first edition of the awards in the region. Hero FM’s Drive Show emerged as Nakuru’s most favourite radio programme, while a capella sensation Harmonic Kings took home the Group of the Year award.

The highly emotive event held in Legacy Hotel was attended  by hundreds of fans.

Moses Obimbo was crowned the Comedian of the Year, while Nakuru’s favourite Fred Mochama (Mc Genius) emerged winner of the MC of the Year prize.

In the music category, Mimah Shaffie was crowned the Female Artiste of the Year, while Imeandikwa and Nishatulia were crowned the Video and Collabo of the Year, respectively.

In the producers’ category, Peter Kiganda (Phizzo) was awarded the Audio Producer of the Year, while Crizo Mzeya was named the  Video Producer of the Year.

HUGE SUCCESS

In the radio category, Hero Radio’s Cate Vobic and Mc Emios were crowned the Radio Presenters of the Year in the various categories.

According to one of the organisers, Mr Charles Mogire, the event was aimed at rewarding artistes in Nakuru County as well as the various radio stations.

“The inaugural event made us realise that there were more categories that were left out during the nominations. We are hoping to include them in the nominations for next year,” said Mogire.

The fun-filled event exhibited high quality stage performances from both the old and the up and coming artistes from Nakuru.

“It was a huge success story that demonstrated what youth can do themselves, even with the rising unemployment, and what they can do politically and in other spheres if united,” he said.

The dress code of the event, black and red, also gave the various designers from the region an opportunity to dress up some of the nominated artistes and showcase the various designs.

Mogire said the event was filled with surprises. “Most of the artistes who walked away with the various awards were the upcoming ones. Little is known about them, or not known at all,” said Mogire.

He said from the nominations, they were able to recognise some of the most committed artistes in the industry and those growing at a fast rate.

Four out of the seven Nakuru radio stations, which include Hero Radio, Sauti ya Mwananchi, Radio Amani and Radio Fahari, took part in this year’s competition.

Mogire said the awards are meant to celebrate Nakuru artists in the entertainment industry and will be held annually.
