Micro braids without hairline damage

What you need to know:

  • Firstly, the client’s hair and scalp was washed and treated with a deep conditioning protein treatment and moisturiser. This, Betty explained, nourishes the scalp and hair as it grows.
  • Next, the hair was plaited into cornrows. The micro mesh cap was placed on the lines and secured at the edges and in the middle. The human hair micro braids are then plaited onto the cap.
  • The cap is designed to look as natural as the scalp, making it undetectable. The clients’ own hair remains under the cap, undisturbed.

Have you ever dreamed of having extremely thin micro braids that last for up to six months without damaging your hairline?

This style is now possible when done using a micro mesh cap. This is one of the newest braiding techniques. The procedure takes three hours to create beautiful micro braids that can be set to look like a weave, or left on their own as braids.

The Saturday Magazine beauty team paid a visit to Betty Njoroge, a micro braids specialist for a firsthand experience.

Firstly, the client’s hair and scalp was washed and treated with a deep conditioning protein treatment and moisturiser. This, Betty explained, nourishes the scalp and hair as it grows.

Next, the hair was plaited into cornrows. The micro mesh cap was placed on the lines and secured at the edges and in the middle. The human hair micro braids are then plaited onto the cap.

The cap is designed to look as natural as the scalp, making it undetectable. The clients’ own hair remains under the cap, undisturbed.

It is not pulled or damaged the way it happens when it is braided directly. This technique makes it possible to achieve very thin micro braids, which cannot otherwise be plaited onto actual hair.

The end result is stunning. The micro mesh cap allows the scalp to breath. It is easy to wash and treat the hair regularly. The style can last for up to six months with proper care.

QUICK FIX:

SAVE THE HAIRLINE

Thin braids are a joy to behold, but spell bad news to the hairline. Keep your braids firmly in place to prevent breakage. This is done by sewing through the first and second lines to ensure that they do not move around. Do not pull the braids when styling or holding them up. Aim for a sewn in style which can be changed every week by your stylist.

ASK IRENE:

After weeks of wearing my hair in braids, my hairline has receded all around. How can the hair grow back as fast as possible? – Diana, Nairobi.

The minimum time your hair will take to grow back is one month. Apply castor oil daily to your hair line to maximise growth. Other useful oils are: Temple balm, Soft and Natural hair restoring oil, and glycerin.
