Homes with wooden floors tend to have higher resale value making them a popular choice for many homeowners. The good news is that much of today’s wood comes from sustainable forests making wood an eco-friendly building material.

In addition, manufacturers have created laminates that replicate the look and feel of wood without the expense. These laminates are also easier to care for and to clean than real wood. If you cannot afford to lay a wooden floor throughout your house, you can opt to use it in living and dining rooms.

Advantages of wood

Wood has several advantages over other flooring. If mined for a sustainable forest, wood is kind to the environment. It also looks great given the texture and variety of the grain which means that no two planks look exactly the same.

It is soft underfoot and it has been discovered to be a good choice for allergy sufferers. Wood has good heat insulating properties, staying warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather.

Choosing the right wood

Wood provides your home with an array of different timbers, colours and grain patterning that can be used to provide an outstanding floor that creates a superb setting for any décor.

Different species of wood have different colours. Colours range from pale yellow to dark brown to red. Choose the colour that best sets off your style.

Keep in mind that dark colours work best for formal homes while pale wood works best in country, casual and contemporary settings.

After choosing the type of wood and its colour, you will need to make a decision on the pattern of your floor. The wood can be laid in parquet which creates geometric designs, tiles or planks depending on your preference.
