Kenyan troops have rescued two aid workers kidnapped along the country’s border with Somalia in 2011, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) announced Friday.

The two, Daniel Njuguna Wanyoike and James Kiarie Gichoi and Care International respectively, are scheduled to arrive in Nairobi Saturday.

The Kenyan aid workers were kidnapped by the Somali militant group al-Shabaab while working along the border.

In statement to Nation.co.ke, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said it: "Welcomes the news of the safe release of the two Kenyan nationals freed from captivity in Somalia."

MSF also confirmed that Daniel Njuguna was not an MSF member of staff but at the time he was taken captive, he was working as a driver’s helper for the transport company Shibli Enterprises Ltd, that was contracted to transport MSF supplies from Nairobi to Marere, Middle Juba, Somalia.

KDF said they are currently at the Dhobley level two hospital in Somalia for a check-up before travelling.
