Government officials to be probed over 12,000 ghost workers

The Cabinet has ordered government officials be investigated for allegedly colluding to pay 12,000 staff unaccounted for after the conclusion of the biometric registration exercise.
A Cabinet meeting chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Anti-Banking Fraud Unit to start investigations immediately to unmask those behind the ghost workers.
The three institutions have been ordered to “investigate officers in government, and other institutions suspected to have colluded with outsiders to siphon out funds through ministerial payrolls using fake names.”
A statement released after the Cabinet sitting Thursday stated that 12,000 staff were unaccounted for after the biometric registration was concluded.
Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru recently said over 12,500 names of government employees who failed to show up for the biometric registration will be struck off the payroll beginning November.
She said the government payroll stands at 172,522 employees, but only 160,012 people turned up for the drive.
