Attackers hurl grenades at Mandera County offices

nUnknown gunmen hurled grenades at Mandera County government offices early Monday morning, destroying one side of the building.

Confirming the incident to the Daily Nation by phone, Mandera County Commissioner Alex Olenkoyo said the grenade explosions extensively damaged the perimeter wall and shattered one side of the building.

He said the attackers were repulsed by police officers guarding the building and officers from the Kenya Police Reserve (KPR) who responded to the 2am attack.

Mr. Olenkoyo said the assailants, seemingly a large group, disappeared into a neighbouring village after the attack.

“Our security officers have now cordoned off the village in a bid to flush out the criminals. We have also beefed up security patrols along our common border with Somalia to ensure that the assailants don't find any chance to escape, ” said Mr. Olenkoyo.

The county commissioner said there were no casualties in the incident.

He said attackers took cover behind the TB Manyatta, a wing in Mandera's county referral hospital, before hurling the grenades at the county offices.

The county commissioner said the cost of the damage had not been established.
