What Kenyans are searching for ahead of Valentine's Day

Kenyans are searching for “how to be single” hours to Valentine’s Day, even as Nairobi streets are awash with vendors selling flowers and setting up stands with roses and confectionery.

Google says it was among the most trending searches under the “How to” category.

The search engine said “What is Lent” also trended as the second most searched item on the online search platform.

Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and repentance is observed by Christians in preparation for Easter and kicks off on Ash Wednesday, which also trending as number eight in the “What is” category.

Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar and this year, it was celebrated on February 10.

WHAT IS OVULATION?

The second most trending query in the “What is” category was “what is ovulation”, part of the female menstrual cycle whereby a mature ovarian follicle discharges an egg ready for fertilization.

Last month, "How to calculate safe days" was the most searched topic, showing the degree to which Kenyans are obsessed with reproductive issues.

Kenyans also searched for answers to the query “How to conceive”, probably because many women would like to take advantage of Valentine’s Day to be mothers.

The "what is ovulation" was followed by “what is digital marketing”, an umbrella term for the targeted, measurable, and interactive marketing of products or services using digital technologies to reach and convert leads into customers and retain them.

ZIKA VIRUS

Kenyans are also interested in understanding about the Zika virus, a mosquito-transmitted infection related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus, which has been declared by World Health Organisation (WHO) an international public health emergency due to its link to thousands of birth defects in Brazil.

“With six months to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the rapidly spreading virus has caused concern among athletes and sports officials globally,” read a statement by Google.

Other searches under the “What is” category are What is LTE, a 4G mobile communications standard, where users of LTE network experience data speeds that are up to 10 times faster than the current 3G network and “what is Super Bowl 50”, National Football League championship game played annually between the champions of the National and the American Football Conferences.

This year’s game gave Denver Broncos a 24-10 win over Carolina Panthers during finals at Levin’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on February 8.

“What is lust” is also a trending search as Kenyans want to know more about lust.

Appearing in number ten on the list is “What is Quickbooks", a set of software solutions designed to manage payroll, inventory, sales and other needs of a small business is number ten on the list.
