IEBC in final lap of vote count

The electoral agency Sunday morning said that it had received 256 of the 264 constituency results declaration forms where voting happened in the Thursday repeat presidential election.

The 264 are minus 27 constituencies in the Nyanza counties of Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay and Siaya that failed to vote after a section of opposition supporters prevented Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials from opening polling stations, with some keeping off the areas altogether in fear of their safety.

VERIFIED
By midday, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission had verified 237 Forms 34B from the constituencies, with a total of 7,063,841 voters, which is 43. 39 per cent voter turnout.

"The Commission has received hard copy results from 256 constituencies. Two hundred and thirty-five have been verified and posted," the IEBC said on its Twitter handle at 11.40am, before the figure went up.

TURNOUT
With just eight of the 264 constituencies yet to deliver their results forms to the National Tallying Centre at the Bomas of Kenya, Kenyans might by the end of today know how many votes President Uhuru Kenyatta garnered and what the turnout was.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has asked the returning officers to deliver the forms physically, unlike the annulled August 8 poll where the forms were sent to Bomas electronically, downloaded and verified by the commission without reading each constituency result one by one as is happening now.

Mr Chebukati on Thursday placed the voter turnout figure at 48 per cent, a figure he revised through his personal Twitter handle to just over 6.35 million of the 19,611,423 voters.

PRESIDENT
The IEBC on Saturday asked Kenyans to wait for all the results to be verified for the turnout to be known.

At midday, President Uhuru Kenyatta, with 98.32 per cent of the vote, polled 6,945,181 votes.

Nasa leader Raila Odinga, who withdrew from the poll and demanded a new one 90 days after fresh elections, had 65,598 votes - 0.93 per cent.
