The Kenya Alcohol Control and Policy Alliance (Kapa) said alcohol dependence among young people in the country was alarming and would be inaccessible to the youths if it was expensive to buy.
Addressing reporters in Nairobi, Kapa officials said they were worried about the number of youths abusing alcohol.
“We encourage the Kenyan community to take the plight of the boy child with equal vigour as they have that of the girl child," said Ms Elizabeth Ogott, an official with Kapa.
"Making … spirits harder to access through (a) tax increase would continue to support policy and legislation in place, ensuring alcohol inaccessibility to minors and students," she added.
