Govt to recruit 10,000 new police officers next month

What you need to know:

  • The officers will undergo a nine-month training before they are inducted into the National Police Service.

  • NPSC also delegated the powers to recruit to Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

Ten thousand new police officers are to be recruited in the next two weeks.

National Police Service Commission (NPSC) chairman Johnson Kavuludi said on Tuesday that the recruitment would ensure Kenya is on the right path to attaining international standards; a police for every 400 citizens.

The exercise is scheduled to take place on April 4, in 331 recruitment centres across the country.

“The urgency to undertake this process cannot be over-emphasized as we are well aware of the important role police service plays in the security of our country. The successful passing out of the officers will no doubt bring the ratio of police to public closure to the internationally recognized standards,” Mr Kavuludi said.

The officers will undergo a nine-month training before they are inducted into the National Police Service.

Mr Kavuludi spoke at NPSC headquarters in Nairobi.

NPSC also delegated the powers to recruit to Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

The IG is expected to select a team of officers to conduct the exercise.

“No police officers apart from those appointed by the IG to oversee the recruitment will be allowed within the precincts of the centres,” Mr Kavuludi added.

In the past rogue officers took leave so that they are present at recruitment centres with the aim of influencing the outcome of the exercise.
