What you need to know:

  • According to Mr Alai, he was the only one questioned among the 10 bloggers who spent several hours at the DCI.

  • Also summoned was Mr Yassin Juma, who was arrested over the weekend for posting photos.

Ten bloggers were Wednesday summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi to record statements.

Among those grilled was Mr Robert Alai, who said he was questioned in regards to a post he had made on social media about the recent donation of land to squatters by the Kenyatta family.

Mr Alai’s post claimed that the Kenyatta family had stolen 30,000 acres of land but chose to donate only 2,000 acres.

INTERROGATED

According to Mr Alai, he was the only one questioned among the 10 bloggers who spent several hours at the DCI.

Also summoned was Mr Yassin Juma, who was arrested over the weekend for posting photos, on his Facebook page, of Kenya Defence Forces soldiers after the Al-Shabaab attack in Somalia.

However the Bloggers Association of Kenya has spoken out against what they said are government efforts to intimidate Kenyans online, citing the arrest of Mr Juma as an example of the government cracking down on free speech.

The association said that the charges against him go against freedom of speech.

The group said that there is a case in court challenging the legality of  the law allowing police officers to arrest people on the charge of misuse of a telecommunication device.
