Kenya Airways on Saturday cancelled 9 flights as the volcanic ash clouds spread to parts of Europe.

In a statement to newsrooms, the airline's managing director Titus Naikuni said flights to Amsterdam, London and Paris would not be operational due to continued closure of the European air space.

"Kenya Airways would like to confirm to its passengers, customers, the travel trade and the public of changes to its flight schedules for today (Saturday April 17, 2010) resulting from Icelandic volcanic dust drifting towards Europe," the statement reads.

Mr Naikuni assured booked customers that Kenya Airways staff in the three cities would contact them with more information.

"The airline's staff is making all possible efforts to contact all our booked customers with this information in order to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unavoidable occurrence."

On Friday, the Kenya Aviation Authority indicated that parking space was strained since passengers and cargo were stranded at the airport.

Airlines began to cancel flights on Thursday when a volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland erupted Wednesday night for the second time in less than a month.
