110 in race to replace PSs out over graft

What you need to know:

  • A list PSC released has former PSs Beatrice Kituyi and Philomena Koech. They will face the interview panel next week.
  • Also on the shortlist are former ambassadors Sospeter Machage and Ken Osinde. Long serving provincial administrator Abdul Mwaserah is also in the race.
  • Former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia and former National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation boss Petronilla Ogut also want the posts.

At least 110 individuals are in the race to replace principal secretaries suspended over graft claims, in the event President Uhuru Kenyatta sends them home.

Candidates the Public Service Commission (PSC) has shortlisted include former permanent secretaries, ambassadors and heads of state corporations.

PSC asked eligible individuals to apply for the jobs last month after five cabinet secretaries and several PSs were asked to step down to allow for investigations into corruption allegations against them. This sparked speculation that suspended PSs could be replaced.

“There is a newly created ministry but that is not all as it has also emerged that some PSs will be charged over corruption. The President is unwilling to work with such people,” a source in PSC told the Daily Nation yesterday.

Kenya Association of Manufacturers CEO Betty Maina and former Interim Independent Electoral Commission commissioner Ken Nyaundi are also on the shortlist.

Interviews start this morning at the PSC headquarters next to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre with a total of 40 applicants expected to be interviewed.
