13 relatives die in Machakos road accident

Thirteen relatives headed for a traditional wedding ceremony in Makueni County died and 10 others injured early Saturday morning after a road accident at a bridge on Tawa-Masii road.

Twelve died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries on arrival at Machakos Level Five Hospital.

According to Mwala OCPD Joseph Mugoh, the passengers on the ill-fated matatu were travelling to Kithungo in Mbooni, Makueni County from Kangundo, Machakos County to attend the wedding.

Mr Mugoh said the accident occured when the driver of  the public service vehicle lost control after the brakes failed and plunged into Isiponi river.

The injured are recuperating at Machakos Level Five Hospital while the bodies in the hospital's mortuary.

Police have launched investigations on the incident and have urged motorists to be cautious while driving.

A section of local leaders who arrived at the scene led by the former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka urged drivers to be careful on the road.

They attributed the accident to the poor state of the road, saying the bridge was wrongly placed.

Mr Musyoka also urged the residents to stop vandalising bridges.

Other leaders present were Makueni Senator Mutula Junior, MPs Kisoi Munyao (Mbooni), Regina Ndambuki (Kilome) Vincent Musyoki for Mwala and Budalangi's Ababu Namwamba who condoled the families of the deceased.
