Three people died and 12 others injured in two separate accidents on Sunday.

The two died when a Meru Nissan Sacco matatu they were travelling in collided with a motorbike at Naka, near Chuka Town. The matatu was heading to Meru from Nairobi.

The driver of the matatu, Mr Mark Bundi, said the boda boda rider unexpectedly entered his lane, causing a head-on collision.

Mr Kenneth Murithi, injured passengers, said the matatu was speeding. “After negotiating a corner, a speeding motorbike suddenly appeared and they collided,” he said.

“The driver and the rider were unable to keep to their lanes because they were both moving at a very high speed,” said Mr Murithi
Chuka Igamba Ngombe Deputy Police boss James Kilonzo confirmed that one person died in the accident. “The police arrived at the scene and rushed those who had been injured to the Chuka General Hospital. However, one person was confirmed dead on arrival,” said Mr Kilonzo.

VIOLATING LAWS

Mr Kilonzo accused boda boda operators, especially along the busy road Meru-Embu highway, of violating traffic rules. He warned that action will be taken against anyone breaking traffic rules.

In another accident, one person died and 12 others were injured when a 14-seater rammed into a stationary truck yesterday morning.

Police said the matatu heading to Ruiru from Kiambu town hit the truck at Kamiti Corner junction when the driver lost control. A female passenger died on the spot.

Those injured in the mid-morning accident on the Kiambu-Ruiru-Nairobi road were rushed to Kiambu hospital where some were admitted.

The driver of the matatu, Mr Laban Gatheru, said breaks failed.

“The accident happened as I was attempting to avoid running into spikes mounted by traffic police,” he said.
