20 classic VW Beetles race to Mombasa for charity

I have always been very comfortable with my other love, the Concorde, the age tested and proven Volkswagen Beetle.

Twenty members of the Volkswagen Anonymous Club have kicked off a ride to Diani using their old Volkswagen Beetles.

The charity ride with 14 old VW vehicles started the journey from the KFC Total Petrol Station along Mombasa Road, with the participants hoping to raise money to support children’s home.

The officer in charge of communication at the club, Benson Mungai, said proceeds from the ride will go to the Chombo cha Upendo Children’s home in Loitoktok.

“We will start the ride today and head to the Amboseli National Park. Tomorrow, we will head to the children’s home and hand in our contribution and then cross to Tsavo West through Mariakani,” Mr Mungai said.

He said the club was already sponsoring a student from the children’s home, who is now in Form Two at Kangundo Boys’ High School.

Nation Media Group is the biggest sponsor of the event. The club began in 2009 and boasts a registered membership of 30.

The event, according to another member, Robert Kihara, is meant to also prove that even the old Volkswagen vehicles were capable of doing long distances.

The oldest among the vehicles is a 1966 Beetle while the newest was produced in 1975.
