Three people were arrested Friday for carrying 80 children on a school trip in three Toyota Probox cars.

“One of the vehicles had 30 pupils, another 35 and the other 15, besides luggage,” said Transmara Traffic Commandant Saudi Ochiengo.

The pupils were travelling from Nkararo to Lolgorian in Kilgoris Constituency in Narok County for a music competition.

Mr Ochiengo described the incident as shocking, inhuman and a gross violation of traffic regulations.

PACKED INTO THE CARS

He said police officers were on routine patrol when they came across the overloaded vehicles and stopped them.

He said some of the pupils were very young and the way they were packed into the cars amounted to torture.

Mr Ochiengo called on parents to ensure they knew of the travel arrangements if their children were attending such events.

“I shudder to imagine what would have happened if any of these vehicles were involved in an accident,” he said.

He urged school management to ensure pupils were transported in vehicles that were in good condition, were insured and had the correct carrying capacity.

The school management had to find alternative transport for the pupils to continue their trip as the three vehicles were confiscated and taken to Kilgoris Police Station.
The drivers will be charged on Monday.
