The Anglican Church of Kenya has released a list of six candidates in the race to succeed retiring Archbishop Eliud Wabukala.

The church has nominated bishops James Ochiel (South Nyanza), Moses Masamba (Mbeere), Joseph ole Sapit (Kericho), Joel Waweru (Nairobi), and Lawrence Dena (Malindi) to contest in the election to be held on May 20.

ACK Diocese of Embu Bishop David Muriithi said the six are qualified for the position and have been requested by the church to accept the nomination.

“We are confident that whoever wins will steer the church forward. The faithful are praying for the candidates awaiting the election day,” he said.

He said candidates are not supposed to campaign but the faithful can "talk about their suitability".

“The six candidates are barred from campaigning since they were shortlisted by the church. We are expecting to get an archbishop who will unite the church as well as champion for the rights of the less privileged,” he said.

Speaking in Embu town, Bishop Muriithi said the church hopes the next leader will be vocal.
