AP officer shoots wife, kills self after domestic quarrel

An Administration Police officer shot and critically injured his wife before committing suicide at their residence in South B.

The AP Senior Sergeant attached to the Westlands Sub-County offices went home on Monday at around 7.30 pm and picked a quarrel with his wife over the house rent.

According to a neighbour, the deceased wanted the Sh16,000 he had earlier given his wife for March’s house rent. It was however not very clear what transpired.

The neighbour, Peter Thuita, told the police that at around 9pm he heard screams from the house followed by successive gunshots.

Makadara head of CID Zach Nanguli said that the officer arrived home earlier than usual and is suspected to have taken alcohol before the fatal shooting.

He shot the wife five times on the neck, leg, hand, shoulder and abdomen before she managed to escape from the house. He then shot himself on the head and died on the spot.

The wife, identified as Janet Atieno, was rushed to Mariakani Cottage hospital in a critical condition. She is also an AP Constable based at the Security of Government Building (SGB), Uhuru Camp.

His official firearm, a Ceska pistol, loaded with seven rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.

“We also found eight spent cartridges,” said the CID chief.

A Facebook page associated with the officer had a post that read: “I must do something stupid. Liwe liwalo. I am fed up.”
