Five people are fighting for their lives in various Nairobi hospitals after a vehicle veered off the road and hit them on Saturday evening.
Rosemary Wangui Maina’s right leg was amputated and by Sunday evening, she was still in the MP Shah Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
The accident happened near the Sankara Hotel in Westlands.
The SUV belonging to Mr S S Johan, an advocate, was being driven by his employee, Julius Kanda Macharia.
Ms Maina, 51, and her sister Jane were heading to their Kawangware home from Parklands where they work as househelps.
Ms Maina had just left Ms Manita Kaur’s residence on 1st Avenue, Parklands.
“She left at around 1.30pm. In vain did we attempt to call her when we learnt that there had been an accident in Westlands. Later, someone picked the call and told us that she was one of the injured,” said Ms Kaur.
Ms Maina has worked in Parklands for eight years. Her daughter, Ms Stella Wanjiku, told the Nation at the hospital that she received a call from an unknown person on her mother’s phone.
“I spoke to her shortly before she left her place of work and I think someone checked her phone records and called me,” she said.
Ms Wanjiku arrived at the scene shortly before the victims were taken to hospital.
“I took a motorcycle to the scene of the accident. My mother’s leg was broken and there was a lot of blood in her mouth,” she said.
On Sunday, the driver, who is being held at Parklands Police Station, said he lost control of the vehicle when its brakes failed.
