New Agricultural Society of Kenya officials took office on Friday.

They promised to transform the farmers’ organisation that has been hit with leadership wrangles in the last few years.

The council, which is the governing body of the society that organises annual agricultural fairs, split following a special meeting on February 27 that saw High Court judge Anthony Mrima elected national chairman.

However, during the society’s 92nd Annual General Meeting at its headquarters in Jamhuri Park, Nairobi County, members resolved their differences and welcomed Justice Mrima’s election.
They cheered when he was pronounced the national chairman of the 114-year-old organisation.

During the society’s council meeting in February, Mrs Annabel Kiriinya, Mr Charles Owelle and Mr Jackson Tuwei were elected his deputies.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Mrima promised to improve ASK’s capability of organising trade fairs.

INTEGRITY

He pledged to serve the organisation responsibly and with integrity and called on his deputies and members to support him.

Outgoing ASK Chairperson Alice Kalya welcomed Mr Mrima’s team.

“The incoming national officials bring a wealth of experience, having served in the society and the public sector,” she said.

ASK holds annual trade and agriculture shows in Nairobi, Mombasa, Machakos, Kitale, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nanyuki, Meru, Embu, Kakamega, Kisii, Nyeri, Garissa and Kabarnet.

“During the 2013/2014 financial year, the society posted 65 per cent growth, one of the best in our history,” Ms Kalya said.

ASK Coast Branch was feted for having registered the highest number of members in 2014.
One of the challenges the new office bearers will face would be to revamp the trade shows into lively events that can attract people from all walks of life.
