Alfred Mutua ‘failed to prevent drug abuse’ at rugby fete

Nacada chairman John Mututho has accused Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua of allowing the sale of alcohol to children at a rugby tournament in the county last weekend.

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse boss said the Machakos County government failed to control the sale of alcohol at the Masaku Sevens, resulting in underage drinking.

He told journalists on Tuesday that he had received complaints from churches in Machakos on the matter. Mr Mututho said drunken youth threatened to burn down a church if they were not allowed to “do their dirty things there”.

“That’s a failure on Mutua’s part,” he said in Nairobi. “It’s his business to ensure that he licenses people to handle alcohol and drugs and pornography properly.”

The tournament, he said, was marred by blatant drug and alcohol abuse and “total misconduct of the youth”. While Mr Mutua had a “brilliant idea” in organising Masaku Sevens, some people used it to sell alcohol to the underage, he said. The governor, “with his many cars” and police should have prevented that, he argued. “I blame him.”

Mr Mututho spoke after he held a brief meeting with the National Security and Administration Committee. The meeting was adjourned to next Tuesday.

Mr Mututho said he would present to the committee videos and pictures of what happened in Machakos. “What happened during the day, in the church compound, in broad daylight, is worse than what they did in Sodom and Gomorrah.”

He proposed that all “jam sessions” that admit children under the age of 18 should be banned to protect the youth.
