Two bodyguards of Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua's wife, Lilian, and two Machakos County inspectorate officers have perished in a road crash.

Police on Tuesday said the crash occurred at 00.20am near Lukenya on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

INJURIES

They said the officers in a Nissan Tiida saloon car died when their vehicle collided head-on with a Toyota Land Cruisier that was overtaking another vehicle.

Their driver and that of the Land Cruiser survived the crash and were admitted to hospitals with injuries.

The five were heading home, Machakos, after escorting the governor’s wife to Nairobi.

Dr Mutua sent condolences to the families and friends of officers attached to his office.

"We pray to the Almighty God to comfort the families of our departed colleagues and give us all the strength to bear the loss, " he said in a statement issued by his press secretary Mutinda Mwanzia.

"Some of the officers had spent the day with me during my very busy trip to Yatta sub-county on Monday."

The governor said the vehicle the officers were travelling in had just dropped off one of his assigned bodyguards and was heading to drop the other officers to their homes when the crash occurred.

"This is a very sad occurrence because we all work and treat each other as family. Improvement of our infrastructure and lighting are critical in minimising road accidents in our nation," he said.

Athi-River police boss Shama Wario said many accidents had occurred on the Lukenya stretch in the recent past and cautioned drivers not to overtake carelessly.

Bodies of the deceased were taken to Shalom Hospital mortuary.
