Arrest of cleric sparks riot in Mombasa

Uneasy calm has returned in Mombasa following Thursday evening chaos sparked off by the arrest of a Muslim priest at Musa Mosque in the city’s Majengo area.

Youths on Thursday evening engaged police in running battles as the officers sought to arrest Sheikh Ramadhan Juma whom they accused of inciting the youths through his preachings.

Mombasa County Commander Robert Kitur confirmed that the priest was already in their custody and said they will issue a statement Friday.

This comes a few weeks after the successor of the slain Muslim cleric Sheikh Aboud Rogo, Sheikh Ibrahim Rogo was gunned down with three others by unknown assailants on their way home from the said mosque which sparked riots in the coastal city.
