Deputy President William Ruto has called for the arrest of people who stripped a woman in public alleging that she was indecently dressed.

The Deputy President said Kenya is not a primitive society and legal action should be taken against those who do not respect the rights of others.

“We do not want to live in a primitive world where people do not respect the rights of others, especially the rights of children and women,” he said during a funds drive at Chwele Girls Boarding School in Bungoma County on Saturday.

Men at the Embakasi stage on Tom Mboya Street in Nairobi were filmed stripping a woman last Tuesday on allegations that she was dressed indecently.

The video went viral and the act was condemned by Kenyans.

Kenyans on social media condemned the incident, with the hashtags #MydressMychoice and #strippingshame trending on Twitter on Saturday and Sunday.

A group of women in Nairobi have said they would on Monday hold a demonstration in support of the woman, with reports that a similar incident happened in Mombasa.

The demonstration is organised by the Kilimani Mums, a social media group largely made up of women.

The planned procession, which has been backed by several Kenyans on social media, will begin at 11:30am from Simmers Club on Kenyatta Avenue, proceed to Moi Avenue and then to the Office of the President on Harambee Avenue.

Police Inspector-General David Kimaiyo has taken up the matter and asked the woman who was stripped to record a statement.

“The National Police Service is appealing to the lady who is alleged to have been stripped naked at the Embakasi stage, Tom Mboya to report to any police station and make an official report in order for us to investigate the matter,” Mr Kiamiyo said in a statement through police spokesperson Zipporah Gatiria Mboroki.
