Asman Kamama ditches Jubilee, joins Maendeleo Chap Chap

Tiaty MP Asman Kamama has ditched President Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party as pressure piles on him to resign as chairman of the National Assembly’s Security Committee.

Mr Kamama has now joined Governor Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap party as he seeks to defend his seat in troubled Baringo County.

PRESSURE

He crossed over on Monday morning at Maendeleo Chap Chap’s headquarters in Nairobi even after denying the plan last week.

Mr Kamama will be facing the Reverend Simon Kiuta, who is eyeing the Jubilee ticket, and Baringo County Assembly Speaker William Kamket, who wants to run on the Kanu ticket in the August polls.

His defection comes as pressure mounts on him to quit the National Assembly’s Security Committee amid military and police operations in Baringo.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi is among leaders who have called for Mr Kamama’s resignation "for the operation to be successful".

BANDITRY

This was after the MP was adversely mentioned in the ongoing investigation into banditry and cattle rustling in the county.

Mr Kamama has since denied any links to bandits and killer gangs in Baringo and blamed his political rivals for the accusations.

His defection is yet a big win for Mr Mutua’s party, which, together with Kanu and the Party of National Unity, have been sharing the spoils of the vicious fight for Jubilee tickets.

Maendeleo Chap Chap has so far welcomed defectors from Tharaka-Nithi, Meru and Embu, among other counties.
