A man was on Tuesday sentenced to death for defiling and then strangling a six-year-old girl.

Bernard Wamuti Kamau, 34, defiled and killed the girl on January 5, 2009 at Kiamara Estate in Kiambu County.

Kamau worked as a night guard at a home in Runda and lived in the same neighbourhood with the child’s parents. Their homes were about 100 metres apart.

On January 5, the little girl was seen playing near the coffee plantation in the evening. Her parents were away.

A witnesses said he saw Kamau coming from the coffee plantation and when he passed near him, he noticed that his green trousers were bloody and his shirt had vomit.

When the girl’s parents, Mr John Manda and Ms Salome Wanjiku, came home that night and found that she was missing, they raised the alarm.

Villagers mounted a search but did not find her and continued the search for two more days. On the third day, they found her body in the coffee plantation.

Her private parts were ruptured and there was blood all over, and vomit covered her face.

The man who met Kamau on the evening the girl disappeared told the search team what he had seen.

The police were alerted and they arrested Kamau. His house was searched and the trousers were found still covered with blood stains. Police also found the yellow striped shirt he wore, which had vomit.

A DNA test confirmed that samples of the blood stains and the vomit on his clothes matched those of the girl.

And on Tuesday, Justice Nicholas Ombija concluded that the prosecution had proved its case beyond any reasonable doubt.

“The evidence proves he is the one who lured the minor into a coffee plantation and defiled her. In the process of defiling the child, he strangled her to death. I sentence him to suffer death,” pronounced Justice Ombija.
