What you need to know:

  • Teacher was walking with his girlfriend when he was robbed and then shot in the head and chest.

Gunmen shot dead an American teacher in Lavington and seriously injured a Chinese in Kilimani on Thursday.

Mr Cameron Chase Huntley, 26, was walking to a restaurant with his girlfriend Sally Jirongo for breakfast when they were confronted by two gunmen on a motorbike near Riara School at around 11am.

The gunman stopped near Huntley, who was a teacher at Language Centre Riara, and ordered him to surrender his bag.

Ms Jirongo pleaded with him to give it up and surrender but he refused, prompting the attacker to snatch it.

Huntley, who was from Buncombe County in North Carolina, confronted the gunman, who fatally shot him in the head.

Nairobi police commander Japheth Koome said that the attackers shot him in the head knocking him down and then shot him twice on the chest and stomach.

The two then jumped onto their motorcycle and fled, running over him as they escaped towards Nakumatt Junction.

The victim was picked up by a motorist, Dr Mathias Odera Aketch, who rushed him to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital. He told the Nation he was driving to the hospital when he heard the gunshots and then he saw the victim groaning in pain.

“I removed my first aid kit but realised his condition was serious. He had been shot in the head,” he said.

Huntley was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police found three spent cartridges at the scene.

A guard at the nearby Calvary Worship Centre, Mr Godfrey Mukundi, said he heard the woman screaming followed by three gunshots.

He then saw two men riding away but he did not take the registration number of the motorcycle.

The American was teaching English and doing some missionary work in Nairobi.

His family and former school mates are now raising funds to take the body back to the US. A fund has been set up through Eblen Charities.

Police said they believed it is the same gunmen who shot a Chinese man on Elgeyo Marakwet road at around 3pm.

The victim is at the Nairobi Hospital in critical condition, having been shot on the left side of his chest.

According to the police, one of the gunmen is a wanted robber who targets foreigners and is a resident of Kawangware.
