Rescue mission under way as bodies of KDF soldiers arrive

Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo has said a search, rescue and recovery operation for Kenya Defence Forces soldiers taken hostage is under way, as she received the first batch of bodies of those killed in Somalia.

The four caskets draped in Kenyan flags were received by Ms Omamo and top military officers, including Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe, at Nairobi's Wilson Airport at 10pm on Monday.

Two chaplains and an imam prayed before the bodies were carried away in ambulances.

Ms Omamo said: "We expect to see more of our soldiers in the coming days. We appreciate the support we are receiving from Kenyans. We urge patience and we shall keep the nation abreast. It's a complex situation and we are handling it meticulously."
