The body of a 13-year-old girl who drowned in a pool in the Aberdare Forest last Friday was retrieved on Sunday.

Milka Waruguru, a class seven pupil at Mweiga Primary School in Kieni West Sub-County, was in an expedition in the forest with her friends when she excused herself to go and wash hands in the nearby pool. She slipped and fell into the pool.

Rescuers from Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Mt Kenya National Park were dispatched to the scene but the body was only retrieved yesterday after a Kenya Dive Club team joined the search.
Hampered efforts

Acting Mountain Region Conservation Area Assistant Director Simon Gitau said the falls are situated in an attitude of about 3,200 metres above sea level.

“The Sunday School pupils were in a tour at the national park and they were having lunch at Queen’s Cave Falls when the accident happened,” he said.

The muddy and cold waters and lack of proper gear, including oxygen cylinders, hampered efforts to recover the body in time.

A relative, Mr Francis Muraya who accompanied the girl’s father Nelson Njoroge, said pupil daughter was in a group of other Sunday school pupils from Mweiga PCEA Church for the expedition.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega said the fact that it only took experienced divers three hours to get the body after a three-day fruitless search made need for such specialised teams urgent.
