Police in Mombasa on Monday found two improvised explosive devices in a vehicle they had impounded and parked in their yard.

The bombs were in a Toyota Surf vehicle belonging to two men of Somali origin who were arrested last week for alleged involvement in terror activities.

The two suspects are being held at the Port Police Station, but the vehicle was parked at the county headquarters.

Acting on a tip-off last week, Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers stopped the vehicle as it headed towards Mombasa Island from Changamwe and arrested the two suspects.

A Mombasa court granted police orders to detain the suspects for five days to conclude their investigations.

However, the bombs were discovered Monday by experts who were called to inspect the vehicle.

Holed up in meeting

By the time of publishing this story, Mombasa county police chiefs were holed up in a meeting at the county headquarters.

Journalists were also barred from accessing county commander Robert Kitur, who declined to comment when reached on phone.

“Gentlemen our bosses are inside, but we are sorry we have been ordered not to allow you inside,” said a police constable who was manning the gate.

Police sources said bomb experts from the Kenya Defence Forces would pick the bombs for safe detonation.
