Police on Monday detonated two bombs that had been planted at the entrance of the Soldiers of Faith Church at Kiamaiko, Nairobi.

The two bombs weighing 5kg and 2kg were discovered at different intervals by members of public.

They had been placed in a polythene paper bag together with another a gadget believed to be the detonator.

Bomb experts collected the explosive devices and took them to an undisclosed location for detonation, saying that the two were too heavy.

“We could not detonate the two bombs because they were too big and could have caused massive destruction at this place,” said Starehe police boss Samuel Anampiu.

Mr Anampiu said the police could not rule out the possibility of church having been the target of the attack.

“These two are conventional bombs used in First and Second World Wars but they were still live and too dangerous,” said the police boss.

He said the bombs were big enough to flatten the area and thanked the locals for having acted fast to alert the police.

He called on scrap metal dealers to be vigilant so that they do not collect devices that they did not recognise.

The police boss said nobody had been arrested in connection with the bombs.

The incident paralysed business in the area as hundreds of locals milled around the scene in order to catch a glimpse of what was going on.
