Briton in lover killing case charged afresh

What you need to know:

  • The court had been told that a psychiatric evaluation and a post-mortem examination on the body of Ms Peris Ashley Agumbi Mumtah were necessary before charges were read.

A Briton accused of killing his 22-year-old Kenyan girlfriend was yesterday charged afresh.

Mr Carl Gary Singleton, 41, for the second time, denied the charge in the High Court, Nairobi.

His bond application will have to wait until March 18 when the court will make a decision.

Mr Singleton was charged afresh following protests that he had taken a plea yet a mental check had not been carried and his lawyer wanted him released on bond.

POST-MORTEM

The court had been told that a psychiatric evaluation and a post-mortem examination on the body of Ms Peris Ashley Agumbi Mumtah were necessary before charges were read.

When he was charged on February 2, the court was told that a psychiatrist had issued an inconclusive report, but recommended that he be taken for further assessment.

“We have received another full report from the psychiatrist, which indicates he is fit to take a plea and we are ready to proceed,” said a lawyer for the prosecution.

The two met two years ago on Facebook and Mr Singleton flew to Kenya last June to spend time with Ms Agumbi.
