Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has appointed a special committee to reclaim grabbed Judiciary land.

The committee’s mandate includes tracing documents on ownership of Judiciary assets and inquiring into unlawful allocation of land, court buildings and residential property.

It is also supposed to come up with modalities to reclaim the grabbed properties.

Dr Mutunga gave the committee eight months to complete its work, with a mid-term report after four months indicating its progress and preliminary findings.

Dr Mutunga’s decision comes in the wake of revelations in May by Chief Registrar Anne Amadi that a 2.5-acre plot belonging to the Supreme Court had been grabbed.

It is worth over Sh2.5 billion.

The seven-member task force will be chaired by Court of Appeal Judge John Mwera.

Other members are High Court judges Lydia Achode and Olga Sewe, Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Nzioki Wa Makau and Ms Esther Nyayaki, the Supreme Court registrar.

Mr Duncan Okello, the chief of staff in the office of the CJ and Caroline Kabucho, an assistant registrar for subordinate courts, are also in the team.

Resident magistrate Becky Cheloti and Mr Fredrick Nying’uro will serve as joint secretaries.
