Three men have been taken in for questioning by police over a security scare at Garden City Mall in Nairobi.

According to Kasarani OCPD Mr Robinson Mboloi, on Tuesday, the three suspects were arrested while trying to access Garden City Mall with an object suspected to be improvised explosive.
“Two of the arrested are believed to be accomplices to the main suspect,” said Mr Mboloi.

According to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police George Kinoti, the devices found at the mall were not an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as earlier alleged but were phones wired together.

“The device at Garden City Mall was not an IED, it was an amateurish collection of phones wires tapped together to look like an IED. Bomb techies disrupted it using a small charge for safety measures, quick response returned the normalcy at the mall and no cause of alarm” he said.

A statement from the Mall said that when the man came to the security perimeter check point, he was acting suspiciously which led to him being arrested.

“The man was found to be carrying a small handheld device, so the mall security acted swiftly to implement a security procedure, calling police and anti-terrorism personnel to the Mall,” reads the statement.

High end malls have been on high alert after West Gate Shopping Mall was attacked in 2013 by Al -Shabaab terrorists killing 67 people.

The Junction Mall in Nairobi has had a security scare which was contained after quick response.
