Cholera cases raise fears of an epidemic

Fears of a cholera epidemic spread on Thursday, with new cases of the disease in Migori, Isiolo and Kisumu counties.
In Migori, a worker at the Masara trading centre died yesterday at the Arombe Dispensary. Three other people were treated and discharged.
Health workers said the woman was brought to the dispensary by relatives when “she was already irreversibly dehydrated”.
In Isiolo, a man has died and seven other family members admitted to the Isiolo public hospital following a cholera outbreak in the county.
A child and the seven adults have been isolated to contain the disease.
In Kisumu, health workers have started distributing water-treatment sachets to households. County Health Executive Elizabeth Ogaja said a patient had died and 30 other people admitted to hospitals last week.

He said the Masara open-air market would remain closed pending the construction of public toilets.
Two days ago, cholera claimed two lives in Migori. The outbreak — which started in Rongo, Nyatike and Suna West sub-counties — has spread to Suna East and Kuria West sub-counties.
In Homa Bay, eight patients have been admitted to the county’s referral hospital.
