City Hall on Tuesday morning clamped properties belonging to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) over non-payment of land rates amounting to over Sh2 billion.

Nairobi County officials raided KBC's main building on Harry Thuku Road and blocked the main entrance with a lorry. They also took over the car park.

Officials said they also took over two other properties in Karen in a bid to recover the Sh2.06 billion in unpaid land rates from the State broadcaster.

City Hall officials, however, removed the truck from the entrance at 12.30pm after meeting with KBC management.

City Hall Head of Budget Morris Okere said the management issued them a Sh5 million cheque. He said the two sides will hold another meeting next week.

He said the KBC had not paid land rates since 2008.

He said in 2014, the State broadcaster agreed to pay Sh5 million monthly but stopped after paying Sh20 million.

"KBC failed to fulfil their part of the bargain as they stopped paying Sh5 million as we had agreed," said Mr Okere.

He said City Hall would crack down on other government institutions that have not paid their land rates.
