A Nairobi County revenue officer was on Monday charged with the murder of his wife after her mutilated body was found in the couple's city house.

Mr Johana Munyau Mweni is accused of causing the death of Ms Rose Wairimu Ngugi on April 7 at Kamulu in Njiru, Nairobi City County.

He has denied charge before Justice Stella Mutuku.

The prosecution claims Mr Mweni made a phone call to his father-in-law, informing him to go find his daughter's body after attacking her.

Mr Mweni, the prosecution claims, told his father-in-law that he had fought with Ms Ngugi and hit her, “causing her to fall down", and that she was "unconscious”.

POOL OF BLOOD

Police say relatives entered the couple's home through the rear door, which had been left open, and found the woman lying in bed in a pool of blood.

“After investigations commenced, the accused was arrested on April 8 in the city centre and locked up at Ruai Police Station," lawyer Cliff Ombeta, for the bereaved family, said.

"He was taken back to the house on April 9 for further interrogation with a view of recovering the murder weapon and other exhibits, which included a blood-stained trouser and a shirt.”

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko recommended that Mr Mweni be charged with murder after investigations revealed that instead of rushing his wife to hospital since he had a vehicle, he called other people to go check on her.

EYES GOUGED OUT

“It is clear that he had an intention to kill the deceased,” the prosecution claims.

A post-mortem report on Ms Ngugi's body shows that she died of head and chest injuries.

Her eyes had also been gouged out.

Judge Mutuku denied the accused bail and locked him up after Mr Ombeta claimed that Mr Mweni had threatened potential witnesses in the case.

BAIL DENIED

Mr Mweni moved to court on April 27 under a miscellaneous application seeking bail pending trial.

He had argued that the case would take a long time to determine and had promised not to abscond.

However, the judge ruled that bail was not an absolute right.

The case will be heard on June 28.
