  • The MPs who had come in to condole with the family said they were worried that the the investigation would not be concluded as has been the case with the cases of the late Prof George Saitoti who was the Internal Security Minister and his assistant Joshua Ojode.

A section of MPs allied to the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (Cord) are urging the government to conduct speedy investigations into the death of Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo.

The legislators, led by Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and Minority Deputy Chief Whip and Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, said they had every suspicion that Mutula’s death was “not normal” and the government should “find the truth for all to see.”

“We want the government of Jubilee to ensure that there is thorough investigation so that we get to know the root cause of Mutula Kilonzo’s death,” he said at the late Senator’s home in Gigiri, Nairobi.

“My humble request to President Uhuru is to come in personally and ensure that that root cause of the death of this great man is known to Kenyans. Whether it was normal or abnormal needs to be known. Every stone must be turned,” they added.

The MPs who had come in to condole with the family said they were worried that the the investigation would not be concluded as has been the case with the cases of the late Prof George Saitoti who was the Internal Security Minister and his assistant Joshua Ojode.

The two died in a chopper crash last year but the investigations are yet to yield any leads.

“In this country, we have become so used to listening to the government, saying it will take every action, no stone will remain unturned, until it is beginning to sound like a broken record. We want to say that his death should not be in vain,” added Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo-Mabona.

“We don’t know yet about Ojode and Saitoti’s death, we don’t know yet about so many people who have died under mysterious circumstances. We can only take so much as a country. If nothing is done, we will reach a breaking point,” she added.

Mr Kilonzo was found dead on his bed in his Maanzoni home on Saturday last week. The family brought in a pathologist from the UK to witness the autopsy led by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.

They later announced that the complete results may be released in the next eight to 10 weeks.

On Friday, the MPs said the government should have its own investigation.

Mr Wanyonyi said, “Let this not be another story of past deaths of senior citizens who have passed on and so much has been said and nothing has been done. We will like to go to the core and find out what caused his death.

“The country wants to know the truth, the family wants to know the truth and whichever way it comes, whether it was natural death of caused, we want to know it so we can put to rest all these speculations going around,” he said.

The MPs included Lamu Women representatyive Shakilla Abdalla, Kwale Women Rep Zainab Chidzuga, Kimilili MP Suleiman Murunga, Siaya Women Rep Christine Ombaka, Taita Taveta Women Rep Joyce Wanjala and nominated MP Zulekha Hassan.

The late Senator is expected to be buried next Thursday.
