Cotu has vowed to oppose any plans by the salaries commission and employers to introduce performance contracts for workers.

Cotu secretary-general Francis Atwoli said on Sunday it was impossible to implement the proposal due to the ill-equipped Productivity Centre of Kenya (PCK) that should take a leading role in providing required data for wage determination.

“PCK lacks every single capacity to even collect and collate any labour related data based on the country’s cost of living indices as well as data on the individual sectoral performance of our economy through which employers can derive arguments on wages to their employees,” said Mr Atwoli in a press statement to newsrooms.

He went on: “Both the Salaries and Remunerations Commission (SRC) and Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) should desist from misleading Kenyan workers and employers over a matter they understand very well is absolutely impossible to implement.”

He said FKE and Cotu had on many occasions called on the Ministry of Labour to support the PCK in creating the productivity index to measure the production of individual workers and companies.

SRC vice-chairperson Daniel Ogutu and FKE executive director Jacqueline Mugo have called for the scrapping of the current timed-based wage system in favour of a productivity-based system.
