County Commissioner warns over hate leaflets in Nakuru, Naivasha

Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik has warned those spreading hate leaflets in the county that police were closely monitoring their activities.

Mr Birik said the hate leaflets warning a certain community to leave the county in the next seven days were distributed in Nakuru, Naivasha and Molo towns.

“Our security officers are on high alert and we have beefed up security in the county and I would like to assure the residents that the government would not allow chaos to erupt in the county” said Mr Birik.

He said security has also been beefed up in all private installations and institutions including international schools in Naivasha, Gilgil and Molo following the spread of the hate leaflets.

He urged the residents of Nakuru County to report such cases hate messages to the nearest police station saying “ we have launched investigations to establish the authors of these hate messages.”

SITUATION CONTAINED

The Interior ministry Friday stated on it's official Twitter account that through the County Commissioner's intervention, the situation had been contained.

"Nakuru County Commissioner intervened & has held meetings with the local administration from the county & ensured security is guaranteed to all," the statement noted.

Meanwhile, Nakuru County governor Kinuthia Mbugua has called on political leaders to avoid unnecessary actions that could fuel hate, negative ethnicity, dislike and animosity in the region.

In the statement sent to the press, Mr Mbugua sent a strong message of unity to all Kenyan’s as the country is faced with fresh challenges of disharmony.

“Our focus for now to ensure that people of Nakuru go about their businesses that contributes to the overall growth of the county and the nation at large,” read the statement sent by the county Director of communication Mr Eddy Kimani.

Mr Mbugua also asked the residents to join him in condoling with the numerous families in Mpeketoni who lost their loved ones in the heinous killings by the yet to be arrested perpetrators.

He further urged them to embrace the region’s community diversity and live in harmonious coexistence.
